Thank you for your enquiry about Port Melbourne Yacht Club (PMYC). We are pleased to provide information about our activities and welcome new members. We hope the following information will assist your decision to join the club.

PMYC aims to be a leading club for off-the-beach sailing on Port Phillip Bay, and relies on its members to contribute to the continuing development and operation of the Club. This involvement promotes the friendly culture of the Club and ensures responsiveness to members’ needs. The Club has been operating on the foreshore of Port Melbourne for over 100 years and are using the new Clubhouse which was built to replace one destroyed by fire in 1990.

This Information for Prospective Members page and the download document explains the benefits of membership and how the Club operates and answers other questions commonly asked by prospective members.

Joining

Joining the Club is simple, but since we are an incorporated Club there is a formal nomination procedure. However making application for membership is straightforward.

We prefer payment at the time of application, but you may prefer to delay payment until the Committee has formally processed your application. Applicants who pay when their application is submitted receive rights to use Club facilities from the date of their payment.

All funds raised will be used to purchase sailing equipment for the club's programs.

Learning to Sail at PMYCThe Club owns a small fleet of Pacers (two person mono-hull dinghies). These boats are used for the sailing school lessons conducted for beginners during the summer months on Saturday mornings. Lessons are conducted in accordance with the Yachting Australia recommended syllabus and give a solid grounding to new sailors and those who want to refresh their skills. Once you are confident and competent you will be welcome to sail club-owned boats in Saturday afternoon racing, upon application.

Boat Storage

All members (except Social Members) are eligible to apply for boat storage, which is available for mono-hull dinghies, catamarans and sailboards. Storage spaces are allocated annually at the storage working-bee held prior to the start of the summer sailing season.
There is usually a waiting list for storage and priority is given to boats of members who are active in club sailing and who have fulfilled all the requirements for storage allocation. To be placed on the waiting list you must be a member of the Club (excluding Social).

Annual Storage
The current storage situation can be ascertained by contacting the appropriate Storage Manager
Sue Spicer 9427 7720 hm for monohulls
Marty Jones 9587 0418 hm for catamarans
If storage space is available you will need to complete a Boat Registration / Storage Application and pay the storage fee.

PMYC Competition Sailing

The Club holds races on most Saturdays during the season from October to May. Some special events are also held on Sundays. We also have midweek twilight sailing on selected Wednesday evenings during summer.
Saturday race briefing occurs at 1300h with racing commencing at approximately 1400h. Trophies are presented for all classes with 5 or more boats. For miscellaneous mono-hulls and catamarans the VYC yardstick handicap method is used. The Club also presents trophies according to individual boat handicaps, calculated for each crew that has recorded three or more results. This Club handicap competition allows every crew to be in contention for a weekly trophy.

Classes of Boats Sailed at PMYC

The main classes of monohull boats sailed at PMYC include: Pacer; Laser, Sabot and the classic 18 ft. Jolly Boat.
The main classes of catamarans include: Taipan and Hobie Cat.
Even if you have a different class boat you can sail in races and compete in the Club handicap events.
The Club prides itself on its friendly and competitive sailing.

Crewing & Club Boats

If you don’t have your own boat there are a number of alternatives that would enable you to sail.
Club members are often looking for people to crew with them in Saturday racing. The best way to get a crew place is to come to the Club about 1230h on a racing Saturday and ask the Officer of the Day to notify members of your availability at the race briefing.
There are also club-owned Pacers and small catamarans available upon application for use by members who can satisfy the Sailing School Coordinator of their sailing competency.
