| Late last year PMYC became aware of the dilemma facing many inland yacht clubs because of the effect of the drought on their usual sailing spots. The club decided to offer a weekend of sailing at Port Melbourne, to the inland clubs and any others who wanted to show their support. Under the leadership of Commodore Walter Edgar and Regatta Race Officer Michael Broise, a group of club members started contacting other clubs and organising the myriad of details needed to put on a good sailing Regatta. Two races were held on Saturday afternoon, there was a BBQ in the evening, two more races on Sunday morning, followed by a presentation of prizes, made possible by the generosity of the regatta sponsors: Helly Hansen, Yachting Victoria, Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron, Ronstan, Charles Rose, Savouring Italy Delicatessen, Corporate Vision, and Michael Malherbe. "I'm sure that I speak for everyone in extending our thanks for last weekend. Hospitality and facilities were tops, matched by the fun on the water" emailed Ian & Marie, skipper and crew of Kindred Spirit of Cairn Curran SC, " a special thank you to the rescue crews who took the place of our bloody useless outboard motor!" Sailing was with a southerly wind of around 10 knots, the monohulls sailing a triangular course and a separate windward return course or "sausage", for the catamarans. The yachts, racing in six divisions, were a mixture of off-the-beach dinghies, catamarans and trailer sailers. Youngsters sailed Sabots, Flying Ants and Minnows, Mosquito cats were in strength as well as F18's, the new Viper F16, solo Lasers, three crewed Jolly Boats and many other classes. The seven trailer sailers moored off the PMYC after racing, was a good sight to see. Daryl Stone of Albury/Wodonga Yacht Club thanked PMYC for putting on the weekend "My kids had a great time and the Victorian Flying Ants had their first sail together for the past 3 years" Given the response from the country clubs and the success of the Drought Busters Regatta, PMYC hopes to make it an annual event.
